The Art of patience photography - Master Hector ramos

I am blessed to travel the world for my job for the last 26 years. In between almost weekly flights, classes and interactions with people I find time to walk and observe the world (and people). I have the need for quiet and solitude (sometimes in the middle of crowds) alone.

Photography helps me lose the sense of time, rest (maybe divert?) my mind and helps me find myself whole again. In particular, the Leica M helps me slow down, become much more thoughtful but fluid, selective and careful knowing that every shot costs me. This might be a reason why at the back of my mind every shot should count. It is the perfect device for me to experience the blend of simplicity, skill and instinct. I usually roam around with just one camera (with no meter) and one lens (either a 50 or 35 mm) . In my years of experience, self-imposed limitation forces me to become creative enabling me to see things I would not see when I have more choices.

My rule is to never force the process but to wait for the right light, and trust that the right moment comes which beckons my heart to press the shutter release. Places and moments ‎have an organic way of revealing themselves when one waits.

sacred images

My early work on travel, nature and landscape photography was done mainly with Fuji Velvia 50. Especially when I lived in India I craved the isolation, stillness and peace nature provided. My more recent work ever since moving to Europe has been mostly in black and white. I've done some work with the digital Leica M8 and M9P (which I still keep and use). But for my personal work I love the slowed down workflow of film; how it helps me to de-attach from the images and forget about them for a while (good for the mind); and to be surprised and see them again with fresh eyes. Film has the wonderful qualities of unpredictability and imperfections which are very much like life itself.

Black and white film as a medium is another tool to further simplify my mind.  Black and white pictures bring my attention immediately to the faces of people and somehow make me feel more the mood and emotions.  For landscape, nature and travel photography I still love color slide film.
